Tata Altroz CNG AMT Expected to Launch Soon

The newly updated Tata Altroz continues to offer petrol, diesel, and CNG fuel options, just like its previous version. A key upgrade is the introduction of an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) for the petrol variant. Although the CNG version didn’t get this feature at launch, sources suggest that an AMT option for the CNG variant is on the horizon, likely to arrive within the next few months. Tata Motors hasn’t made an official announcement yet.

What’s in Store for the Altroz CNG AMT?

Tata is expected to borrow the proven CNG-AMT setup from its Tiago and Tigor models for the Altroz. This move allows the brand to deliver a hassle-free driving experience in a more premium hatchback without reinventing the wheel. Since the AMT-CNG combination is already in use, introducing it in the Altroz — a more premium hatchback — is a strategic next step. Interestingly, Tata is currently the only carmaker in India offering AMT with a CNG powertrain from the factory. The Tata Altroz is likely to continue using the familiar 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder engine, which generates 73 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque, matching the output of its CNG siblings. Additionally, the model is expected to feature the dual-cylinder CNG setup, a smart configuration that maximizes fuel storage while preserving ample boot space.

AMT Variant of Altroz Aimed at First-Time Buyers

At the unveiling of the facelifted Altroz, Sailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, pointed out that close to 70% of Altroz customers are purchasing their first car. To make automatic driving more accessible to this audience, Tata has introduced a cost-effective AMT option, expanding its appeal in the competitive hatchback market.

Additionally, around one-fourth of Altroz customers prefer automatic variants. To make automatics more affordable and appealing to new buyers, Tata has now added an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) option to the Altroz lineup. The more advanced 6-speed DCT will still be available for those looking for a premium driving experience.

Chandra explained, “AMT is a cost-efficient entry point for customers new to automatic cars. It’s already performing well in this segment, which is why we decided to bring it to the Altroz with the petrol engine.”

Tata Looks to Regain Hatchback Market Share

Chandra also opened up about the challenges Tata faced in the hatchback category. He admitted that the decline in market share was mainly due to the aging Tiago and Altroz models, which had not received timely upgrades. “Our biggest drop came in the hatchback space,” he said. “The overall segment shrank by 13%, but our sales went down by more than 30%, primarily because we didn’t make any major updates to our existing models.”
