Capitalizing on its strategic partnership with Suzuki, Toyota is once again employing its well-established platform- to fill lucrative market gaps in its product portfolio.
Following its foray into the hatchback sector accompanied by the Maruti Baleno – inspired Glanza and mid-size SUV segment with Hyryder, based on the Maruti Grand Vitara, building on its successful collaboration with Suzuki, Toyota sets its sights on value-conscious MPV market with Ertiga -derived Rumion.
The Rumion comes with two engines peppy petrol with your choice of a 5-speed manual or smooth 6-speed automatic or eco-conscious petrol-CNG with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Variants of petrol start at Rs. 10.29 lakh and reach Rs. 12.18 lakh, moreover, petrol-automatic range from Rs. 11.89 lakh to Rs. 13.68 lakh. Those looking for the most bang for their buck can check the entry-level S variant, which delivers on both price and performance, and runs on a smart petrol-CNG combo for only Rs. 11.24 lakh.
Its interiors come with two MPVs Toyota Rumion and its Maruti, the Ertiga shares most of their body panels as they are nearly identical, subtle differences lie in grille design, headlights, and alloy wheels.
Toyota infuses its signature design language into Rumion by selecting cosmetic tweaks, most preferably the bold chrome grille channeling Innova Crysta’s imposing presence.
Beyond the grille, Rumion continues with a completely redesigned front bumper, Triangular lamp housing adds a touch of sportiness, although a revised air dam with a sleek silver surround enhances MPV’s aerodynamic appeal. The sleek-dual-tone finish of 15-inch alloy wheels adds a touch of elegance and modernity.
Spacious mid-row with reclining seats, access towards third-row. Passengers and even adults can stretch out comfortably, with a slight head dip at the entrance. Rumion’s 1.5L engine packs enough punch for city commutes, Its mild-hybrid tech can get to town with ease.
Toyota Rumion’s 1.5L engine sips fuel like a pro, especially buyers can expect impressive mileage in a ballpark of 17 kph. But even Rumion won’t guzzle down a wallet, Expect around 9 kph, which is decent for an MPV.
Mechanically, the Rumion is an Ertiga clone. Behind the wheel, it translates to familiar, confidence-inspiring handling, good ride quality, and stable cruising. Prepare some bounce on uneven roads with a full load, which is par for the course in this segment.
The verdict on Rumion is simple and it’s an Ertiga in Toyota clothing—no mechanical or interior change, plus Toyota’s renowned build quality and potentially better resale value.
Ertiga’s charms meet Toyota’s badge, but at a Rs. 50k – 60k premium. Standard 3-year warranty versus Ertiga’s 2-year one might sway brand loyalists, but features remain largely identical.
