India-bound Ford Everest could feature a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine.

Ford is considering equipping the Everest (formerly known as the Endeavour) with its 3.0 V6 diesel engine as part of its reintroduction into the Indian market. Although no timeline has been confirmed for Ford’s return, the inclusion of this powerful engine could add a unique appeal to the new Everest, enhancing its desirability and aligning with the anticipated higher price point.

The Ford Everest’s 3.0 V6 diesel engine generates 250 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Currently produced in South Africa, this engine, along with a 2.0-litre diesel, is expected to be offered in India. Ford plans to assemble the Everest locally and source the 2.0 bi-turbo diesel from its Sanand facility in Gujarat, which already produces this engine for export. The addition of the V6 diesel would allow Ford to expand its lineup, similar to its earlier strategy of offering four- and five-cylinder diesel engines. While the five-cylinder variant has been discontinued, Ford has reintroduced the larger 3.0 V6 diesel in markets like Australia. This engine also powers the Ranger pickup, which the Everest SUV is based on, and the F-150 pickup in regions like Canada. It is commonly used for towing heavy loads, such as boats.

Although towing may not be a key consideration in India, the 3.0 V6 diesel offers substantial torque, power, and a refined driving experience. Delivering 250hp at 3,250rpm and 600Nm of torque between 1,750-2,250rpm, the engine is well-suited for handling heavy loads in pickup trucks. In India, it is likely to provide Everest with effortless performance and robust capability, enhancing its appeal as a large, powerful SUV.

The 3.0 V6 diesel engine is currently produced at the Struandale Engine Plant in South Africa, a unique facility where both inline and V-type engines are manufactured. It features a single large variable nozzle turbocharged larger, dual overhead camshafts, and operates with a compression ratio of 16:1. For added strength and durability, it is equipped with a forged steel, fully counterweighted crankshaft. In certain cases, it even includes an engine block heater to improve performance in sub-zero temperatures. This V6 engine is expected to be offered alongside the 2.0-litre diesel in the India-spec Ford Everest.

Ford is likely to reveal its plans to return to India shortly. The company recently mentioned that it will begin production for export at its Chennai plant and is also considering a range of CBUs (completely built units) and locally produced electric vehicles.
