Citroen has started building the Basalt SUV in India

Ahead of its official market release in the coming months. Citroen is gearing up to launch a new SUV, the Basalt, in India. Production of the Basalt has already begun at their Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu. This factory also builds the C3 hatchback, its electric version (eC3), and the C3 Aircross SUV. The Basalt is expected to hit the market in the next few months.

The Citroen Basalt, built in India, won’t just be for the local market. It’s also destined for export to other countries that drive on the right side of the road (right-hand drive markets).

The Basalt is expected to rival the upcoming Tata Curvv, which has a similar SUV-coupe design. It might also be an alternative to popular mid-size SUVs like the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Taigun, and Kushaq.

The Basalt will likely borrow the 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine from the C3 Aircross, offering 110 horsepower with both manual and automatic transmission options. Unlike the C3 hatch and C3 Aircross, which were criticized for lacking features, Citroen might equip the Basalt with a more comprehensive feature set, though specifics are yet to be revealed.

Citroen’s upcoming Basalt SUV is set to challenge the Tata Curvv in the Indian market. Previewed recently in a near-final form, the Basalt boasts a stylish SUV-coupe design with a length of around 4.3 meters. It positions itself not only as a direct competitor to the Curvv (which shares a similar body style) but also as a unique alternative to established mid-size SUVs like the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Taigun, and Kushaq, even offering a fresh option within Citroen’s lineup against the C3 Aircross.

The Basalt is expected to borrow the 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine from the C3 Aircross, offering 110 horsepower. It should come with both manual and automatic transmission options.

Specifications:  Unlike the C3 hatch and C3 Aircross, which were criticized for lacking features, Citroen is expected to equip the Basalt with a more comprehensive feature set. While specifics are unknown, this suggests the Basalt will likely offer additional amenities beyond the distinct sloping roofline that differentiates it from its Citroen siblings.
