India to Get a Wider Range of Porsche Macan EVs

Porsche is launching the Macan EV, the electric version of their popular smaller SUV. India is one of the countries getting this new car, but currently, only the top-of-the-line Macan Turbo is available for booking. This high-performance model packs 639 horsepower and costs a hefty Rs 1.65 crore (ex-showroom). The good news is that Porsche plans to bring less expensive versions with lower horsepower to India later in 2024.

Porsche Macan EV: More Options on the Horizon

The new Macan EV boasts a next-generation platform, a large battery, and cutting-edge electric technology. This translates to a higher price tag, pushing it out of the entry-level Porsche category it once occupied in India and worldwide.

However, there’s good news for budget-conscious Porsche fans! The lineup is expected to expand with more affordable variants arriving later this year. While Porsche hasn’t officially announced these additions, we can make some educated guesses based on Porsche’s existing strategy with other electric vehicles like the Taycan and the technical specs of the current Macan EV models.

Various power choices for Macan EV

While the high-performance Macan Turbo steals the spotlight now, Porsche hints at a wider range coming to India this year. Here’s what we can expect (based on speculation, not official confirmation):

  • A Mid-Range Option: The Macan 4S (not the Macan 4) might bridge the gap between the base and top trims. This hypothetical model could offer a balance of power and price, packing around 500 horsepower.
  • A More Affordable Entry Point: The most budget-friendly option could be a rear-wheel-drive Macan with a single motor. This variant might utilize the less powerful rear motor found in the Macan 4, offering a more accessible price tag.

One Confirmed Detail: Thankfully, all Macan EV trims, regardless of variant, will likely benefit from the same, sizeable 100kWh battery. This means you won’t sacrifice range for a lower price point.

Not all markets are saying goodbye to the gasoline-powered Macan just yet.

While Porsche plans to discontinue the first-generation Macan with an internal combustion engine (ICE) in some regions due to upcoming regulations, other markets will continue to see it on dealership lots.

India is one such example, where demand for petrol cars remains strong and there are no imminent regulations that the current Macan won’t meet. So, Porsche will keep this tried-and-true model available for Indian buyers.

Porsche Macan Petrol: Still Going Strong in India

The first-generation Porsche Macan, introduced globally in 2014 and receiving two facelifts (most recently in 2022), remains a popular choice in India. Here, it’s available in three trims:

  • The base model: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder priced at Rs 88 lakh.
  • Two 2.9-liter six-cylinder options: the Macan S (Rs 1.44 crore) and the top-of-the-line GTS (Rs 1.54 crore).

While there’s no official word on when Porsche will discontinue the petrol Macan in India, initial reports suggested it might be available until late 2025. However, recent sources indicate Porsche hasn’t made a final decision, so the petrol Macan’s future in India remains uncertain.
